The Problem With Roof Rats

Roof Rats...

  • Are elusive and nocturnal
  • Are difficult to remove once they've established their territory

  • Can be undetected in vacant properties

Indicators of Roof Rats

Number one indicator: Hollowed-out fruit that is still hanging on the tree

Look out for:

  • Sounds. Squeaks, gnawing, clawing, and scrambling in walls
  • Droppings. Roof rat droppings are 1/2“ in length
  • Nests. Often visible in attics, or when vegetation is trimmed
  • Smudge marks. Oil and grease that rub off a rat's fur build up on well-used runways
  • Hollow fruit. Located still hanging on the tree

Pay attention to:

  • Tracks. Adult footprint is 3/4" long
  • Gnawing. Rats constantly gnaw on hard surfaces. Gnawed holes may be 2" or more in diameter
  • Food caches. Rats may store surprisingly large quantities of food in protected areas
  • Pet excitement. Cats and dogs often probe an area where rats are active
  • Odor. Heavy infestations have a distinctive odor
