Personal Use Bait Stations (PUBS) are offered by the Arcadia Neighbor to Neighbor Campaign at local hardware stores, and livestock feed and tack. This includes the bait station and instructions on how and where to install. The resident is fully responsible for purchasing and placing the Bromadiolone poison in the bait stations. Read and follow instructions before handling any poison. This poison which is called "Just One Bite" can be purchased at select hardware and livestock feed stores. The bait station is ideal for people who have lush landscapes, unpicked citrus, pecan trees, figs, date palms, pomegranates, apples, peaches, and apricots. The roof rats are attracted to these areas because of water, food, or shelter and are prone to take the poison bait and be dead within 3 to 5 days. It is important that the resident's home is properly sealed so the poisoned rat does not go back into the house and die, creating a bad odor which may be hard to access and remove. These units are available at Tempe Feed & Tack, Scottsdale Livestock, Ace Hardware (32nd Street and Indian School) and Koller Hardware (16th Street and Bethany Home).

Maricopa County Vector Control monitors roof rat activity across the County. To file a report about a roof rat problem, call 602-506-6616.

Bait Station Instructions
The bait station offered by the Arcadia Neighbor to Neighbor Campaign is designed for the home owner's personal use. This offer includes the bait station and instructions of how and where to install. The bait station is ideal for people who have lush landscapes, unpicked citrus, pecan trees, figs, date palms, pomegranates, apples, peaches, apricots, as well as any human or animal food source. The roof rats are attracted to these areas because of water, food, or shelter and are prone to take the poison bait.

The resident is fully responsible for purchasing and placing the Bromadiolone poison in the bait stations; always read package label before handling. This poison is a single kill method and can be purchased at hardware and feed stores. Only the property's resident may purchase, install, bait, and monitor this bait station, according to State Structural Pest Control Agency. It is important that the resident's home is properly sealed so the poisoned rat does not go back into the house and die, creating a bad odor, which may be hard to access and remove.

Application

  • HOME PROOFING
Seal up house, attic, and exterior walls. Any hole on the house exterior which is the size of a nickel or larger needs to be filled or covered with screen. All cracks should be caulked. Spinning roof ventilators should be checked and screened from the underside of the roof. Tile roofs should be closely inspected. Trim trees and bushes back 24" for roof edge and monitor locations where power, phone, and cable wires meet the house.

  • INSTALLATION
The bait stations can be placed in trees, where the roof rat is seeking food, water, and shelter. Place hole where it can be easily inspected. The bait station is most effective from 4' to 8' above ground and needs to be installed in a level position. Install unit where it is easy to inspect for any rodent activity. Use strap to secure to tree with screws or nails.

  • BAITING
Bromadiolone can be purchased at local hardware, home improvement or feed stores. The packets and square blocks both work well. The packets may be easier to monitor since it would be more apparent when they have been tampered with. Roof rats will enter the station as they pick up the scent of the bait. The tube also serves as shelter for them. The bait is a single kill poison and takes 3-5 days to kill the rodent. Dead rodents should be disposed of properly. Securely seal dead animal in a plastic bag and place in a city trash container. Change bait every six months for best results.

  • MONITORING
Bait stations should be checked once a week to determine if there has been any activity or if the bait needs to be replaced. It is best if you schedule the inspection the same time each week. Any activity should be reported by using the contact us form. As long as there are roof rats in your neighborhood, PUBS should be kept in place to fight future visitors.

Bait Station Placement
Place bait station in trees or along suspected paths of travel. The rodent eats the single kill poison, leaves the trap, and dies within 4 to 5 days. Your home should be secured, so the roof rat cannot access your attic and die. These are oily animals which produce a foul odor when they perish.

Check bait traps weekly for replacement needs and report any activity to the above web address or telephone number.

Palm TreePalm Tree Application
Place bait station on palm tree trunk 60" above the ground. The entrance hole is placed in the top position allowing the rodent to enter the bait station as it is coming down the tree.
Fruit TreeFruit/Nut Tree Application
Place bait station in tree on bough limb with open end on top side. The bait station should be located between 4 to 8 feet above the ground. Roof rats have a tendency to enter traps as they come down the tree.

Using Just One Bite poison and traps properly placed and maintained will easily rid your property of any roof rat activity. Both traps and poison should be placed in containers to protect children, pets, and wild birds.

NOTICE: For best results replace Just One Bite every 6 months; read and follow instructions before handling.
